Spiritual Assist
WINS
2009 CAST Classic

Many times in our lives we feel the touch of someone or something guiding us along our path.  Most times this feeling comes when we need it the most.  The sense of peace and hope can be tremendously uplifting giving us the ability to move forward even when we don’t feel we can.

The 2009 CAST Classic had a spiritual halo over it the entire weekend of Oct. 23, 24, & 25, 2009 and most people never knew it was there.  Butch & Cindy Scheppler came from 2nd Place on Saturday to WIN the annual couples tournament championship on Sunday courtesy of some spiritual assistance.

Butch & Cindy, two really consistent anglers, suffered a forgettable 2009 regular season.  Their less than normal high finish in the regional standings did not materialize in either the CAST Ark-Tex Region or Northeast Region.  They paid their dues in both regions and could not put together enough points to qualify for the annual TOP SIX tournament.

To add to their disappointing season, the week prior to the CAST Classic in Corsicana and Richland-Chambers Reservoir; Butch’s mother passed away.  Fishing became second to “life” as it really is.  They did not even want to go fishing but, something inside them said “get up, move forward, love life!”  Cindy sent their entry fee for the Classic in just days before the event.  They had no plan, no pre-fishing, no desire except that “feeling”.  On Saturday they took off from Oak Cove and just went fishing.  After putting their fifth fish in the boat on Saturday and culling a few “normal” size fish their hopes grew to 19.51 pounds.  After weigh-in and all the “pats on the back”, before going to sleep, Cindy asked Butch, “Do you think your Mom was watching us today?”

On Sunday morning the feeling was still there, but now it was actually carrying them.  It carried them to the place they started the day before.  It had also carried almost a half dozen other couples to the same spot.  No matter, Butch & Cindy motored on past their fellow couples and began fishing in a different spot.  Fifteen minutes into the day Butch told Cindy, “Look at the clouds, why don’t you give that frog a try?”  The explosive strike on Cindy’s fifth cast with the little toad resulted in her first ever eight pound class fish!  Not her biggest, but a definite “kicker”!  In the last two hours on Sunday they completed a stringer of 19.97 pounds, clinching the victory!  Now the feeling was completely overwhelming, Butch & Cindy stopped long enough to sit, shed a tear and give thanks for the life they have and the one that has passed on.

Our congratulations go to Butch & Cindy Scheppler on winning the 2009 CAST Classic.  Their victory garnered them $21,956.00 in cash; the most ever awarded to one couple at any CAST event in its 26 year history!  We are sure for those who looked closely they may have seen something spiritual around the Scheppler’s this weekend.
