Betty & Larry Yarborough
weigh heaviest bag of the year!
If you will look at the newsletter about Lake Bob Sandlin from two years ago, you will see that it set a record for the number of teams weighing fish, 93%. Not a record that one would think would ever be broken. However one year later and again at Bob Sandlin we had 98% of our couples weighing in fish. Now that record should have stood forever, but this year at the lake Bob Sandlin tournament we had 100 contestants and 100% of them weighed in bass at the tournament. Now, I believe that this is truly a record that will never be broken. What a great lake for fishing and for demonstrating the fishing abilities of our couples.
The Texas Game Warden who was at the tournament and even helped out by measuring several of the fish stated that he could not believe the numbers of fished weighed in, especially during a post spawn time on the lake. I have stated it before, but I need to say it again. Our CAST couples are some of the absolutely best fishermen and fisherwomen anywhere around.
This tournament actually started the day before with our annual potluck dinner.
As in the past we held this feast at Rick and Linda Milam’s house on the lake. I have never seen so much food in my life. Of course, I did not want to offend anyone so I ate several helpings of everything. But before you think, what a pig, I have to say that I saw many of the men doing the very same thing. It must have been good, because when it was over we all set around saying “I’m just to stuffed to move out of this chair.” Special thanks need to go out again to Rick and Linda for opening their house up to all of us so that we can have this special time.
Now for the tournament itself. I have already stated that it was the best one that we have ever had and I just don’t have the words to describe it. (Not good for a writer.) Many of the couples were culling fish from early in the day. A lot of the bass came from water 6-8 feet deep around points or in coves that had some type of grass. One of the best producing ways of catching bass was to Carolina rigged an Exude lizard. Several of the couples stated that they caught more fish if the lizard had green on it.
When it was all over, the five bass limit that was brought to the scales by Betty & Larry Yarborough and weighing an astonishing 27.34 lbs. They also had Big Bass of the tournament with a monster going 8.96 lbs. Needless to say, they took the first place honors and collected $900.00 for their effort. In second place with another limit were Tom & Glenda Traylor with 18.84 lbs. Toby Davis Jr. & Charla Massey finished in 3rd with 5 bass going 17.79 lbs. Fourth went to Terry & Bonnie Johnson with 16.40 lbs. Todd Anderson & Tracy Briggs took 5th place with a limit of bass weighing in at 15.80 lbs. Rounding out our top six couples were Will & Kelly Crayton with 14.58 lbs.
I want to send a special thank you to Larry & Liz Petr who stepped up and helped us at the weigh-in. With so many fish being weighed, we could not have gotten through it so smoothly with out them. And of course a big thank you to Gary & Barbara Curtis who help us every tournament.
