CAST South Starts 2008 at Choke Canyon
by Steve & Lori Herries
CAST’s South region kicked off the 2008 season at Choke Canyon on Sunday January 13. During pre-fishing on Saturday, the winds were light and the skies were partly cloudy. Saturday afternoon, a mild cold front blew through, clearing the skies and dropping Sunday morning’s temperatures. Sunday’s bluebird skies and cold morning temperatures made for some tough winter fishing conditions. Of course, that didn’t slow down the South region’s anglers. At first light, twenty teams started the 2008 CAST fishing season.
First place went to new members Jim and Jessica Behnken, a father/daughter team who brought in five fish weighing 21.03 pounds. That was a very nice stringer of fish, although I am inclined to believe that Jessica caught most of them.
Long time CAST South couple Bill and Connie Bales brought in a nice five fish stringer of 18.69 pounds for second place. Bill and Connie said that all of the fish were caught off of one tree in deep water. They said they even culled off of that tree. For some reason, I could not get them to give the exact location of the tree.
Steve and Karen Nixon brought in a five fish limit of 17.4 pounds for third place.
John and Kimberly Goin picked up the last check with a limit of five fish weighing 15.18 pounds.
Rounding out the Top Six are the teams of newcomers Jeff and Jenny Mergele and the father/daughter team of Doug and Jennifer Baker. Jennifer made it a point that they would have fared much better if Doug had actually tried to catch something.
Castaway Rods were won by Larry and Pat Martin and Robby & Dawne Robinson.
Lori and I would like to give a special thanks to the Staghorn Restaurant in Three Rivers for allowing us to conduct registration at their place.
