Robby and Dawne Robinson win Choke Canyon!
The weather was hot and humid as CAST South pre-pared for its final tournament of the season on Lake Corpus Christi. I know the headline says Choke Canyon, but we will get to that. The weather was typical for south Texas in July. What was not typical was the water clarity. A month of torrential rains had ill-effects on Lake Corpus Christi; the water strongly resembled chocolate milk. The only place that semi-clear water was found was way in the backs of creeks.
After pre-fishing Saturday, all of the couples who were at the lake contacted Lori and I about moving the tournament to Choke Canyon. After talking with all of the couples who had fished Saturday, it was determined that only one keeper fish had been caught all day. The decision was made; all we had to do was contact everybody in the region to let them know that the tournament was being moved to Choke Canyon. Within a couple of hours, all of the notifications had been made and the tournament was officially relocated.
Sunday morning a parade of boats left the motel in Mathis, making the 45 minute drive to Choke Canyon. At the end of the day, the first place plaque went to Robby and Dawne Robinson brought in a nice five fish stringer weighing 13.78 pounds. Robby and Dawne also caught the big bass for the tournament at 4.65 pounds.
Second place went to Bill and Mary Beth Langenburg with five fish weighing 10.76 pounds.
Gary and Laura Nixon took third place with four fish weighing 10.22 pounds.
Ranger Boats Ranger Cup Bonus money went to Ricky Roberts and Janet Frerich.
The long commute award goes to Stan Hall. Stan and Mary were just outside of Houston for their son’s wedding on Saturday. Stan got up early Sunday morning, drove home to get the boat, and on to Choke Canyon to fish.
Ricky Roberts and Janet Frerich were the winners of the Kistler Rod Raffle, winning a pair of Kistler Rods valued at $360! Ricky had said that he wanted to buy ALL of the tickets for the drawing. We thought he was kidding. As it turned out, the new rods cost Ricky and Janet less than they had originally intended to spend.
