Johnny and Crystal Fountain post
FIRST WIN on Lake Somerville!!!
by John & Jennifer Anderson
CAST Southeast opened up a beautiful hot day on Lake Somerville at Overlook Park on June 21, 2008. CAST couples enjoyed plenty of parking with registration held at John and Jennifer Anderson’s campsite right on the lake.
Water temperatures on Lake Somerville were pushing 87 degrees and heated up to 91 degrees in the late afternoon. Normal pool lake level is 238 ft. and we were fishing 7 inches below normal pool. CAST couples had to work with summertime recreational boats, jet skis, and even a FULL MOON.
At morning launch each boat raced from Overlook Park to various areas on the lake. Productive patterns through out the day were fishing lily pads, pepper grass, rocky points, and even the famous reed cane.
Many of our CAST couples used their Just Keepers weigh in bag from www.duncanbags.com to bring some nice limits of fish to the scales.
The 1st Place team of Johnny & Crystal Fountain of Damon, Texas managed to catch over 50 fish in water depths ranging from 2ft. to 12ft. With only four fish weighing 12.55 pounds they were still able to take the WIN! They caught their first two keepers around 9:00 am in less than 2ft. of water fishing around reed cane. As the day went on and the sun reached overhead they decided to work deeper water, targeting underwater rocks. Johnny & Crystal’s final two fish were caught in 8 to 10 ft of water on a light Texas Rig, 3/16 oz. sinker using a green pumpkin worm with the tail dipped in chartreuse worm dye. Congratulations to these two anglers on their FIRST WIN!
Taking the 2nd Place position at Somerville, Edwin & Julie Loitz of Trinity, Texas who managed a five bass limit weighing 12.20 pounds. Edwin & Julie caught the majority of their fish on green pumpkin red brushhogs and chartreuse / white spinnerbaits. They mainly targeted lily pads in 2ft. of water or less. Congratulations to this couple on their second place finish.
Finishing in 3rd Place were John & Jennifer Anderson of Liberty, Texas. John & Jennifer ran their UCR Graphics wrapped Skeeter bass boat to productive reed cane areas with pepper grass on the BIG CREEK arm of Lake Somerville. Their five fish limit weighed 10.69 pounds. During practice on Friday John said they tried to put together a pad pattern but as the day went on they were forced to abandoned the pads. They located fish and started picking up bite after bite in the pepper grass and reeds. They had a 30 yard pepper grass patch and a 20 yard stretch of reed cane that were their most productive areas. Their most productive baits were fishing frogs over pepper grass and flipping a 3/16 oz. pegged weight E2 Baits “BOBTAIL LIZARD”. Congratulations for their 3rd Place finish.
BIG BASS award for the Lake Somerville event went to the team of Mark & Morna Lane of Houston, Texas. Their big bass weighed 4.62 pounds! Mark and Morna targeted deep water all day and caught their big fish on a baby brushhog. Congratulations to this team on catching the tournament BIG BASS.
